The volunteers and employees of EWVFD are the inner working parts that make our fire department successful. Dedicated and passionate men and women are always needed in our mission to protect the lives and property of the people of Southeast Alamance County.
As a volunteer, you can expect free certifications in fire and EMS as well as additional certifications at your convenience. These certifications not only allow you to work at a higher level with us, but they also are valid certifications allowing you to work anywhere in North Carolina as a Firefighter or EMT. Volunteer service also enters you into the NC Firefighters Pension, a valuable retirement resource. Qualified volunteers also receive pay-per-call reimbursement for signing up for duty crew shifts in the evenings.
Did you know that you can become a firefighter in high school and earn your professional certifications before you graduate? Click below to see how volunteer service can open the door to a smooth start after high school.
A volunteer firefighter enjoys a unique life experience. Volunteers are the backbone of the American Fire Service comprising over 75% of all firefighters in the United States. Without volunteers, there would be virtually no fire service. This is a proud tradition that dates all the way back to the pre-revolutionary period. The best part? No experience is required; anyone can be a firefighter. As a combination department, EWVFD relies on both full-time and part-time employees as well as volunteers. In fact, volunteers make up the vast majority of our staff here and are involved in all processes from the top down.
The first step is the application. Interested individuals need only stop by Station 5 and grab an application packet or scan the QR codes below and fill them out. After a background check and driving record check, the application is then taken before the membership and then the board for approval. A representative of the department will contact you with the results of your application. Upon entry, you will be issued gear, a pager, and any other equipment you will need to safely and effectively perform your new duties as probationary firefighter.
During your time, you'll attend weekly training meetings on Tuesday nights where you will learn the various tasks and strategies used by our department. You will be empowered with information on how and where to receive classes that will count toward your Fire 1 and 2 certifications as well as EMT. Even members with no experience can join in on the training!
Volunteering is an exciting and fulfilling experience. You will meet new people, discover more about your community than you ever knew, and make connections that will last a lifetime. For more information on volunteering, fill out the "contact us" widget at the bottom of the page.
EWVFD employs the support of full and part-time staff to assist our volunteers and ensure 24 hour coverage every day of the year. Our employees are hard working and dedicated individuals who are highly skilled and intimately familiar with our equipment, apparatus, and skills.
Full time work is conducted on 24 Hour Kelly schedule (24 Hrs On, 24 Hrs Off, 24 Hrs On, 24 Hrs Off, 24 Hrs On, 96 Hrs off) under the supervision of the Chief Bryan Blanchard during the weekdays and work unsupervised on the weekends. Supporting them are part-time staff who operate out of Station 11 and also cover for shift openings on days when full-time staff are off work. Part timers can choose 8, 12 or 24 hour shifts based on availability and location.
Full time positions are salary based and receive $45,000-$55,000 (qualification dependant) starting pay with increases each year based on merit and performance. Part time receives $18 per hour as a Firefighter/EMT(non-driver) and upon completion of a pumping scenario the rate will increase to $19 per hour. EWVFD covers each full time employee with medical, and retirement. Applications for full-time work are available online when openings arise while part time applications are always accepted.
